This session explores the many ways that pattern and texture can transform a drawing. Looking at artists who use these ideas in their work, we’ll investigate how to identify patterns and textures within a still life and translate what we see into marks on paper. How do we draw something that looks rough next to something smooth? How can repeated marks help us describe the surface of an object?
Through a series of practical exercises, you’ll experiment with different ways of making marks and discover how these can be developed into more expressive drawings. The session is open to all ability levels, from complete beginners to experienced sketchers, and is a chance to approach observational drawing in a playful and exploratory way. Materials and equipment are provided.
