Dates: Fri 3rd July | 6pm - 9pm
Fri 10th & 17th July | 1pm - 4pm
In this 3-hour session, we’ll jump straight into the mesmerising process of Western paper marbling. Using a carrageenan solution, we’ll float inks across the surface and transfer our designs onto prepared paper to create colourful, one-of-a-kind patterns.
Paper marbling is both magical and messy, so please wear clothes you don’t mind getting splashed with. We’ll be working at a small scale during the session, but if you’d like to work more ambitiously, feel free to sign up for additional workshops and let us know in advance.
No experience is needed, and all basic materials will be provided. Your marbled papers can also be used in one of our bookbinding workshops.
You will learn:
The basics of Western paper marbling techniques
How to prepare surfaces, inks and paper for marbling
Ways to create layered patterns and flowing colour effects
Date: Fri 10th & 17th July, 6pm - 9pm
In these two 3-hour workshops, you’ll learn the foundations of hard-back bookbinding and create your own durable sketchbook to take home. Alongside practical demonstrations, we’ll share examples of artists and radical collectives who have used bookbinding as a tool for storytelling, archiving and sharing knowledge.
We’ll also introduce other bookbinding techniques that could be explored in future workshops.
No experience is needed, and all basic materials will be provided. Additional materials, including hand-marbled papers made by Samsam, will also be available if you’d like to personalise your book. You may also wish to join one of our paper marbling workshops and use your own marbled papers for your sketchbook.
Please note, you will need to attend both evening sessions to complete your hard-back book.
You will learn:
Core techniques for constructing a hard-back sketchbook
How to stitch, cover and assemble book sections
Ways to customise your book using decorative materials
