Portraiture can seem daunting, but through a series of exercises we’ll explore ways to approach the human face with greater confidence. Looking at artists who use portraiture in different ways, we’ll consider how proportion, observation and mark-making can help us build a portrait.
This session will focus entirely on charcoal and we’ll work from our own reflections, giving us the opportunity to observe ourselves closely while considering how the way we draw can reveal something about how we see ourselves. The workshop is open to all ability levels, from complete beginners to experienced artists. Materials and equipment are provided.

How to use various techniques with charcoal to create tonal qualities, depth, and character.
